Wallpaper - Shady Banana

Created by Kate Jarvik Birch, our Shady Banana wallpaper brings a fresh, graphic take on pop art to the wall. The design centers on a peeled banana depicted with visible painterly brushwork, where rich yellow peels curl downward to reveal the creamy fruit. Bold, expressive blue-grey cast shadows ground the subject against a clean powder blue backdrop, giving the piece strong depth and retro character. Printed as made-to-measure mural wallpapers on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure, this design turns a familiar everyday motif into a confident visual focal point.

In the room

Because of its strong graphic identity and large central subject, we see this wall mural working especially well on an accent wall where the motif has room to breathe. In a dining room or kitchen dining nook, it introduces an artistic nod to food culture without overwhelming the room. It also brings energy to a creative home office, art studio, or teenage bedroom, where the 1960s pop-art influence feels right at home.

In a living room, we would place this wallpaper on a primary wall opposite standard seating or behind a low sideboard, keeping taller storage pieces away so the complete composition and shadow work remain unobstructed.

Styling it

When styling around this design, we prefer pairing it with clean, mid-century modern or retro-inspired furniture that echoes its playful 1960s spirit. Simple dining chairs in warm wood or painted finishes allow the artwork to lead the room without competing patterns.

To keep the focus on the central subject, we suggest keeping surrounding textiles and decorative objects relatively streamlined. Smooth ceramic lighting, chrome or painted metal hardware, and solid table linens in neutral tones balance the bold brushwork nicely.

Colour combinations

The palette in our wallpaper combines vibrant banana yellow, rich ochre, and warm brown highlights with cool powder blue and deep teal-blue shadows.

When choosing colors for adjoining walls, trim, or nearby cabinetry, we suggest drawing directly from the background with a soft powder blue or crisp off-white for a bright, cohesive look. For a deeper contrast, a dark slate blue or charcoal on adjoining doors or woodwork picks up the rich shadow tones beautifully. Warm honey or mustard accents in small doses can also tie into the yellow peel without overpowering the space.
